Book Week is Just Around the Corner:

One of the highlights of the year in the Lower School is Book Week. Each year we invite a special visitor, make stunning door covers, dress-up as a favorite character or author, and celebrate the joy of reading!

This year Book Week will be celebrated 9-13 March and we are very excited to welcome Mrs. Margaret Read MacDonald as our visiting author. Mrs. MacDonald is an internationally celebrated author, folklorist, storyteller, librarian, and professor. She has decades of experience gathering tales from around the world and sharing them with today’s audiences. From 1995-1997 she was even a Fulbright Scholar in Thailand! To find out more about Mrs. MacDonald, her books and programs, please visit her website at www.margaretreadmacdonald.com.

Also, mark your calendars now for these special Book Week Events:

• All Week - Storytelling and Reading Aloud from Moms, Dads, Grandparents, and ISS Staff.
• All Week - Door Cover Art being made in classrooms.
• 11-13 March - Mrs. MacDonald will conduct special workshops with each of the Lower School and BaSICS classes.
Please ask your child what he learned and ask him to share a story with you.
• 11 March - Book Sales and Autographs with Mrs. MacDonald in the LS Foyer. The following titles will be available for purchase and children will be able to have Mrs. MacDonald personally sign their books. Many children cherish these autographed books and keep them for years as a reminder of their experiences in the Lower School.

o The Great Smelly, Slobbery, Small-Tooth Dog
o Tuck-Me In Tales, Bedtime Stories from Around the World

• 12 March - Dress as your favorite book character or author! Children will have their own autograph party from
2:00 - 2:50 pm.
• 12 March - Evening Seminar with Mrs. MacDonald in the ISS Aula. Neighbors, friends, colleagues, and all book lovers
in the greater Stuttgart Region are warmly invited.

Please contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to celebrating a marvelous Book Week with all of the children this year.

Mr. Lawrence's news from the Upper School Library:

On Monday 16th March 2009 our Middle School students will be treated to a visit from two teenage prodigies going by the names of Suresh and Jyoti Guptara.

They are a tri-lingual duo who wrote their best selling fantasy novel Conspiracy of Calaspia at the age of eleven. Born to an Indian father and a British mother and now living in Switzerland the young gentlemen speak English, German and Hindi, three languages which represent sectors of our growing school community.

Now aged 20 their book has recently been published in Germany and their promotional tour has fortunately for us brought them to Stuttgart. They will spend two hours at ISS reading from their novel, speaking about their lives and answering what we hope will be many questions. Parents of grades 6-8 are also invited to attend the event which gets under way at 10.40 hrs and will take place in the Aula.

It is hoped that copies of their book both in English and German will be on sale before and after the event. The authors will of course also be on hand to sign copies. To avoid any disappointment please ensure your children have enough money or your written permission to sign up for a copy if not enough copies are available on the day. The approximate price of the book is €10 for the English paperback and €17 for the German hardback.

Please feel free to read the display outside the Upper School Library. We currently have promotional materials in German only. If you wish to read promotional material in English please consult their website:

We are looking forward to what we hope will be a successful event.
