International School of Stuttgart > learning at ISS > the primary years
![]() The primary years at ISS cater for students from grade 1 through to grade 5, with parallel classes in each grade. Teachers in the lower grades may be supported by a learning assistant and an ethos of team teaching and the integration of English as an Additional Language results in a favorable teacher/ student ratio. Each child receives the appropriate and differentiated attention needed for personal growth and academic development. Students in these years follow the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, a child-centred programme of learning through enquiry using a holistic and constructivist approach. It develops skills, attitudes, confidence, responsibility and self-awareness as well as an inquiring mind which is the foundation for the acquisition of knowledge in later years. The curriculum is organized through six organizing themes (units of inquiry) which span one year and cover the traditional subjects from multiple perspectives. The teachers are experienced facilitators, enabling all students to utilize their talents and skills to ensure enduring understandings and meaningful learning. The Primary School atmosphere is one that champions the welfare of its students, the caring responsibility that supports an international community and the understanding necessary for life-long learning. |
