International School of Stuttgart > learning at ISS > the middle years
The middle years, grades 6 to 10, are an important stage on the path to maturity and independence: a time of physical, emotional and intellectual development. Our organizational and the educational programmes in these years are both designed to support this development.
Our programme for students in these grades is the International Baccalaureate Organization's Middle Years Programme (MYP). The MYP is a course of study designed to meet the educational needs of students between 11 and 16 years of age. In line with the ISS Philosophy, the course aims to help students to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills they need to participate actively and responsibly in a rapidly changing and challenging world. Home-room teachers are responsible for the pastoral care of each student, helping them to meet the challenges posed during these years of development, and a programme of career orientation and internship forms part of the grade 10 curriculum. Focusing on teaching students to become independent learners who can combine knowledge, experience and critical thinking to solve authentic problems, the middle years prepare students for the transition to the demands of academic courses leading to the IB Diploma examinations. |
